How Your Pay Is Calculated
- 1.Annualise Gross Pay: Convert your pay cycle amount to annual gross salary using your weekly hours and paid weeks.
- 2.Deduct Pre-Tax Items: Subtract salary sacrifice to super and eligible work deductions to find taxable income.
- 3.Apply ATO Tax Brackets: Calculate marginal income tax for FY 2026–27 and apply LITO if eligible.
- 4.Medicare & HELP: Subtract the 2% Medicare levy and marginal HELP/HECS repayment to arrive at net take-home pay.
- 5.Employer Super (12%): Calculated separately on Ordinary Time Earnings and paid to your super fund.
Part-time permanent staff keep pro-rata annual leave, sick leave and public-holiday entitlements — unlike casuals, whose higher hourly loading substitutes for those benefits.
How Pro-Rata Part-Time Pay Works
Pro-rata means "in proportion". A part-time employee working 20 hours of a 38-hour full-time role earns 20/38 ≈ 52.6% of the full-time salary and accrues the same fraction of leave entitlements. The proportional drop in gross pay is not matched by a proportional drop in tax — lower income attracts a lower effective tax rate, so take-home falls by less than half.
Tax Advantages of Lower Pro-Rata Income
Because Australia taxes income progressively with a $18,200 tax-free threshold and LITO, dropping to part-time hours often preserves more take-home pay than the headline fraction suggests. On the figures shown, a 52.6% workload keeps roughly 60% of full-time net pay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do part-time employees get superannuation?+−
Yes — eligible part-time employees receive the same 12% SG on ordinary earnings, with no minimum-hours threshold since the $450/month rule was abolished on 1 July 2022.
Is casual loading better than pro-rata part-time?+−
Casual loading (commonly 25%) compensates for missing leave and security, not more total pay. Compare with the Casual Pay Calculator to see the trade-off for your hours.
