How Your Pay Is Calculated
- 1.Annualise Gross Pay: Convert your pay cycle amount to annual gross salary using your weekly hours and paid weeks.
- 2.Deduct Pre-Tax Items: Subtract salary sacrifice to super and eligible work deductions to find taxable income.
- 3.Apply ATO Tax Brackets: Calculate marginal income tax for FY 2026–27 and apply LITO if eligible.
- 4.Medicare & HELP: Subtract the 2% Medicare levy and marginal HELP/HECS repayment to arrive at net take-home pay.
- 5.Employer Super (12%): Calculated separately on Ordinary Time Earnings and paid to your super fund.
Your payslip shows PAYG withholding per pay run, which the ATO calculates assuming each paycheck repeats all year. Slight differences from annual tax ÷ 26 or ÷ 12 are normal rounding — not an error.
Weekly, Fortnightly and Monthly Paychecks in Australia
Most Australian employers pay fortnightly (26 pay runs) or weekly (52 pay runs); monthly payroll is common for salaried professionals (12 pay runs). The same $95,000 salary lands as about $1,827 gross per week, $3,654 per fortnight or $7,917 per month before PAYG withholding.
Why Your Payslip Withholding Differs From Annual Tax ÷ Periods
The ATO PAYG withholding tables (Schedule 1) annualise each paycheck independently and round to whole dollars, so withheld amounts can differ by a few dollars from a simple annual split. One-off amounts like bonuses use a different withholding method, which is why bonus paychecks look more heavily taxed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a $95,000 salary per fortnight after tax?+−
In FY 2026–27 a resident earning $95,000 takes home about $74,080/year, which is roughly $2,849 per fortnight after income tax and the 2% Medicare levy (before HELP repayments or salary sacrifice).
Is PAYG withholding the same as my final tax bill?+−
No. PAYG withholding is an advance estimate collected each pay run; your final liability is settled on your annual tax return, where deductions, offsets and other income adjust the total.
