Reverse Salary Calculator Australia
Start from the take-home pay you actually want to bank and solve the gross salary required to reach it. Unlike the forward calculators, this tool runs the ATO engine iteratively until net pay converges on your target — ideal for negotiating a package from a budget rather than a headline number.
Paid by your employer on top of your salary — not deducted from your pay. Total package: $106,400.71.
| Pay period | Gross income | Take-home pay | Employer super |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual | $95,000.63 | $74,080.43 | $11,400.08 |
| Monthly | $7,916.72 | $6,173.37 | $950.01 |
| Fortnightly | $3,653.87 | $2,849.25 | $438.46 |
| Weekly | $1,826.94 | $1,424.62 | $219.23 |
Banks $74,080.43/year against your $74,080.00 target — converged in 17 iterations to within $0.43.
How Your Pay Is Calculated
- 1.Annualise Gross Pay: Convert your pay cycle amount to annual gross salary using your weekly hours and paid weeks.
- 2.Deduct Pre-Tax Items: Subtract salary sacrifice to super and eligible work deductions to find taxable income.
- 3.Apply ATO Tax Brackets: Calculate marginal income tax for FY 2026–27 and apply LITO if eligible.
- 4.Medicare & HELP: Subtract the 2% Medicare levy and marginal HELP/HECS repayment to arrive at net take-home pay.
- 5.Employer Super (12%): Calculated separately on Ordinary Time Earnings and paid to your super fund.
This is the only tool that runs the tax engine backwards: the forward calculators answer "what do I keep from $X?", while this one answers "what must I earn to bank $Y?" — a different negotiation starting point.
When You Need the Reverse Calculation
Budget-driven planning works backwards: if rent, savings and living costs require $5,000/month net, the required gross is not $5,000 ÷ 70% but the exact salary whose tax stack nets out at $60,000/year — which this calculator solves numerically under your residency, HELP and super settings.
Why You Cannot Just Divide by (1 − Tax Rate)
Australia’s progressive brackets, the $18,200 tax-free threshold, LITO phase-outs, Medicare’s low-income phase-in and HELP thresholds all make net pay non-linear. The solver below runs the full engine up to 60 iterations, converging to within $1 of your target.
