How Your Pay Is Calculated

  1. 1.Annualise Gross Pay: Convert your pay cycle amount to annual gross salary using your weekly hours and paid weeks.
  2. 2.Deduct Pre-Tax Items: Subtract salary sacrifice to super and eligible work deductions to find taxable income.
  3. 3.Apply ATO Tax Brackets: Calculate marginal income tax for FY 2026–27 and apply LITO if eligible.
  4. 4.Medicare & HELP: Subtract the 2% Medicare levy and marginal HELP/HECS repayment to arrive at net take-home pay.
  5. 5.Employer Super (12%): Calculated separately on Ordinary Time Earnings and paid to your super fund.

Repayment Income is not taxable income — it adds back reportable fringe benefits, reportable super contributions and net investment losses, so salary sacrifice does not shrink HELP repayments.

The Marginal Repayment System From 2025–26

Since 1 July 2025, compulsory HELP repayments apply only to the slice of Repayment Income above the threshold — replacing the old cliff-edge rates that charged a percentage of your entire income. In 2026–27 the threshold is $69,528 and the marginal rate is 15% up to $129,717.

What Counts as Repayment Income

Repayment Income = taxable income + reportable fringe benefits + total net investment loss + reportable super contributions (including salary-sacrificed super) − any exempt foreign income adjustments. This is why the estimate below can differ from your taxable income.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do HELP repayments start in 2026–27?+

When your Repayment Income exceeds $69,528 — you then repay 15 cents per dollar between $69,528 and $129,717, with a higher marginal slice above that (uses 2025–26 indexed bands until ATO finalises 2026–27).

Do voluntary repayments reduce compulsory ones?+

Voluntary repayments reduce the loan balance, not the compulsory rate — your compulsory amount is set purely by Repayment Income each year.
