How Your Pay Is Calculated
- 1.Annualise Gross Pay: Convert your pay cycle amount to annual gross salary using your weekly hours and paid weeks.
- 2.Deduct Pre-Tax Items: Subtract salary sacrifice to super and eligible work deductions to find taxable income.
- 3.Apply ATO Tax Brackets: Calculate marginal income tax for FY 2026–27 and apply LITO if eligible.
- 4.Medicare & HELP: Subtract the 2% Medicare levy and marginal HELP/HECS repayment to arrive at net take-home pay.
- 5.Employer Super (12%): Calculated separately on Ordinary Time Earnings and paid to your super fund.
Overtime multipliers come from your award or enterprise agreement — commonly 1.5× for the first 2–3 hours then 2× — but vary by industry. This calculator lets you set both tiers; check your award for the exact rates.
How Overtime Is Calculated Under Australian Awards
Overtime pay applies to hours beyond ordinary time (usually 38 hours/week for full-timers) or outside spread-of-hours rules. Most modern awards pay 150% of the ordinary hourly rate for the first two or three overtime hours and 200% thereafter, though agreements differ — always confirm against the Fair Work pay guide for your award.
Importantly for tax, overtime earnings are simply added to your assessable income; they are taxed at your marginal rate, and higher overtime can push you into the next bracket or across HELP/HECS and MLS thresholds.
Overtime vs a Higher Base Rate
A permanent employee working 5 overtime hours at 1.5× on a $35 base earns the same weekly gross as a $39.47/hour flat rate — but overtime is not guaranteed, and in many awards it does not count toward superannuation Ordinary Time Earnings. Compare scenarios before negotiating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does overtime attract superannuation?+−
Generally no — the 12% SG applies to Ordinary Time Earnings (OTE), which excludes most overtime payments that are distinctly identifiable, unless your award or contract says otherwise.
Is overtime taxed differently?+−
No. Overtime is ordinary assessable income taxed at marginal rates; it only looks "heavier taxed" on a payslip because PAYG withholding annualises that unusually high pay run.
