Casual Loading Breakdown
How Your Pay Is Calculated
- 1.Annualise Gross Pay: Convert your pay cycle amount to annual gross salary using your weekly hours and paid weeks.
- 2.Deduct Pre-Tax Items: Subtract salary sacrifice to super and eligible work deductions to find taxable income.
- 3.Apply ATO Tax Brackets: Calculate marginal income tax for FY 2026–27 and apply LITO if eligible.
- 4.Medicare & HELP: Subtract the 2% Medicare levy and marginal HELP/HECS repayment to arrive at net take-home pay.
- 5.Employer Super (12%): Calculated separately on Ordinary Time Earnings and paid to your super fund.
The loading compensates for no paid annual leave, sick leave or public holidays — a casual earning a loaded $37.50/hr can still bank less annually than a permanent $30/hr worker with 52 paid weeks.
What the 25% Casual Loading Compensates
Under the National Employment Standards, casual employees receive a loading — typically 25%, though awards vary — instead of paid annual leave (4 weeks), personal/carer’s leave, notice of termination and public-holiday pay. The default below uses 25%, but set it to your award’s figure.
Casuals Still Get Super and Real Tax
Eligible casuals receive the same 12% SG on ordinary earnings, and loading is ordinary income — taxed at marginal rates. Set working weeks to 48 (or fewer) to reflect unpaid time off, since casuals are not paid when they do not work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is casual loading exactly 25%?+−
25% is the standard NES/award rate, but some enterprise agreements pay more or use different formulas — always check your award’s pay guide.
Do casuals get paid for public holidays?+−
Only if they work — in which case penalty rates usually apply on top of the loading. Non-worked public holidays are unpaid for casuals.
