How Your Pay Is Calculated

  1. 1.Annualise Gross Pay: Convert your pay cycle amount to annual gross salary using your weekly hours and paid weeks.
  2. 2.Deduct Pre-Tax Items: Subtract salary sacrifice to super and eligible work deductions to find taxable income.
  3. 3.Apply ATO Tax Brackets: Calculate marginal income tax for FY 2026–27 and apply LITO if eligible.
  4. 4.Medicare & HELP: Subtract the 2% Medicare levy and marginal HELP/HECS repayment to arrive at net take-home pay.
  5. 5.Employer Super (12%): Calculated separately on Ordinary Time Earnings and paid to your super fund.

Australia uses a progressive marginal tax system. Crossing into a higher tax bracket only applies the higher percentage to the dollars above that bracket threshold — never to your entire income.

Australian Resident Income Tax Brackets (2026–27 vs 2025–26)

Australia levies individual income tax on a progressive scale across five brackets for tax residents. From 1 July 2026 (the 2026–27 financial year), the statutory marginal tax rate on the $18,201 to $45,000 bracket decreased from 16% to 15%, delivering a maximum annual tax reduction of $268 for taxpayers earning $45,000 or more compared with 2025–26.

The upper brackets remain at 30% for taxable income from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% for taxable income over $190,000 (excluding the 2% Medicare levy).

Marginal Tax Rate vs Effective Tax Rate Explained

Your marginal tax rate is the percentage of tax paid on the next additional dollar you earn. Your effective tax rate is the average percentage of your total taxable income paid in tax (Total Tax ÷ Gross Income). For example, an Australian resident earning $100,000 in 2026–27 sits in the 30% marginal tax bracket (plus 2% Medicare levy), but because the first $18,200 is tax-free and the next $26,800 is taxed at 15%, their total income tax is $20,520 plus $2,000 Medicare levy — an effective total tax rate of 22.52%.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) work in 2026–27?+

Australian tax residents with taxable income up to $37,500 are eligible for the maximum $700 Low Income Tax Offset. LITO reduces by 5 cents per dollar between $37,500 and $45,000 (to $325 at $45,000), and by 1.5 cents per dollar between $45,000 and $66,667, phasing out completely at $66,667. LITO can reduce your basic income tax to zero, making the effective tax-free threshold $22,867 in 2026–27, but cannot offset the Medicare levy.

How are Foreign Residents and Working Holiday Makers taxed?+

Foreign residents do not receive the $18,200 tax-free threshold; they pay 30% from the first dollar up to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000, and do not pay the Medicare levy. Working Holiday Makers (417 and 462 visas) pay 15% on the first $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000 (uses 2025–26 rates until ATO publishes 2026–27 tables).
