How Your Pay Is Calculated

  1. 1.Annualise Gross Pay: Convert your pay cycle amount to annual gross salary using your weekly hours and paid weeks.
  2. 2.Deduct Pre-Tax Items: Subtract salary sacrifice to super and eligible work deductions to find taxable income.
  3. 3.Apply ATO Tax Brackets: Calculate marginal income tax for FY 2026–27 and apply LITO if eligible.
  4. 4.Medicare & HELP: Subtract the 2% Medicare levy and marginal HELP/HECS repayment to arrive at net take-home pay.
  5. 5.Employer Super (12%): Calculated separately on Ordinary Time Earnings and paid to your super fund.

Why annual tax estimates can differ slightly from single-paycheck PAYG withholding: Employers withhold tax each pay run using ATO PAYG Schedule 1, which rounds weekly equivalent earnings and withholding amounts to the nearest dollar and assumes that pay period represents your consistent income across all 52 weeks (or 26 fortnights / 12 months). Allowances, one-off bonuses, unpaid leave, or a 27-fortnight / 53-week payroll calendar year are reconciled when the ATO processes your annual tax return.

How Australian Take-Home Pay Is Calculated in 2026–27

Your gross salary is the headline remuneration before tax, whereas your take-home pay (net pay) is the actual cash deposited into your bank account each pay cycle. In Australia, employers deduct Pay As You Go (PAYG) withholding from each pay run to cover your annual income tax liability, the 2% Medicare levy, and any compulsory study and training support loan (HELP/HECS) repayments.

For the 2026–27 financial year (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027), Australian tax residents claiming the $18,200 tax-free threshold pay 0% on the first $18,200 of taxable income, 15% on taxable income between $18,201 and $45,000, 30% between $45,001 and $135,000, 37% between $135,001 and $190,000, and 45% on taxable income above $190,000, reduced by the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO, up to $700 for taxable income below $66,667).

Impact of HELP/HECS, Medicare Levy, and Salary Sacrifice on Net Pay

From 2025–26 onwards, compulsory HELP/HECS repayments use the ATO marginal repayment system rather than a cliff-edge percentage of total income. In 2026–27, repayments begin only when your Repayment Income exceeds $69,528 ($67,000 in 2025–26), charging 15 cents for each dollar between the threshold and $129,717 ($125,000 in 2025–26) and $9,028 plus 17 cents per dollar between $129,718 and $186,050.

If you enter into an effective pre-tax salary sacrifice arrangement into superannuation, your assessable taxable income is reduced dollar-for-dollar, lowering your income tax and Medicare levy. However, under ATO rules, salary sacrificed super is a Reportable Employer Super Contribution (RESC) and is added back when calculating your Repayment Income for HELP/HECS and Medicare Levy Surcharge thresholds ($105,000 single base tier in 2026–27; $101,000 in 2025–26).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does employer superannuation come out of my take-home pay?+

If your employment contract quotes a base salary "plus super" (Super Exclusive), the 12% Superannuation Guarantee is paid by your employer on top of your gross salary and does not reduce your take-home pay. If your contract quotes a "Total Remuneration Package including super", your base salary is Total Package ÷ 1.12, and the 12% super component is allocated before tax.

Why does my fortnightly payslip differ by a few dollars from annual pay divided by 26?+

ATO PAYG Withholding Schedule 1 calculates withholding on whole dollars plus 99 cents and rounds the resulting tax to the nearest dollar each pay run. Over 26 fortnights or 52 weeks, small rounding differences of $1 to $3 per pay cycle are normal and are reconciled on your annual tax return.

When should I untick the $18,200 tax-free threshold?+

Australian residents can generally claim the $18,200 tax-free threshold from only one payer at a time. Not claiming the tax-free threshold on a TFN declaration increases per-pay-run PAYG withholding (Scale 1), while your full-year annual tax assessment still applies the $18,200 threshold across your combined annual taxable income.
