How Your Pay Is Calculated

  1. 1.Annualise Gross Pay: Convert your pay cycle amount to annual gross salary using your weekly hours and paid weeks.
  2. 2.Deduct Pre-Tax Items: Subtract salary sacrifice to super and eligible work deductions to find taxable income.
  3. 3.Apply ATO Tax Brackets: Calculate marginal income tax for FY 2026–27 and apply LITO if eligible.
  4. 4.Medicare & HELP: Subtract the 2% Medicare levy and marginal HELP/HECS repayment to arrive at net take-home pay.
  5. 5.Employer Super (12%): Calculated separately on Ordinary Time Earnings and paid to your super fund.

Payroll withholding is an ATO-mandated estimate per pay run — not the final annual tax bill. The employee’s true liability is determined on the annual tax return; super is an employer cost paid on top of wages, never withheld from net pay.

Components of an Australian Pay Run

Each pay run the employer calculates gross ordinary time earnings, withholds PAYG income tax (plus Medicare and HELP components) under ATO Schedule 1, pays the net wage to the employee, and separately remits the withheld tax to the ATO plus at least 12% SG super into the employee’s fund.

Employer Cost vs Employee Net Pay

Total employer payroll cost equals gross wages plus super and on-costs like payroll tax and workers’ compensation premiums (state-based, employer-side). The table below separates what the employee receives from what the employer contributes on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 12% super come out of the employee’s wage?+

No. Under Super Exclusive contracts the 12% SG is paid by the employer on top of gross wages. Only Package Inclusive contracts carve the 12% out of the quoted package (Base = Package ÷ 1.12).

Is this PAYG withholding or final tax?+

This calculator estimates withholding per pay run using the same ATO rules as the annual engine, but your final tax is assessed on the return — differences from deductions or multiple jobs reconcile there.
